The sun had gone down by the time we finished speaking to the old ladies at the boardwalk. It was still by no means the âmiddle of the night,â though, which was when Clara claimed that sheâd seen the strange apparitions in the cemetery, so we decided to grab some dinner on the way over to the cemetery in question.
Leito had recommended something called Bitterballen. It was, according to him, one of Curacaoâs staple foods. It was also ideal for eating on the go since they were basically just fried balls served in a container with a side of sauce. We grabbed some from one of the many small restaurants along the edge of the boardwalk before heading out. Once we arrived at the cemetery, we decided to park across the street to stake the place out while we waited for the hour to get later.
The balls looked similar to hushpuppies, but the taste was entirely different. Inside the crunchy, fried exterior was a moist, flavorful, richly seasoned meat. It was really good, and I quickly finished off the first one before digging into a second.
âThere are good,â I noted before taking a sip of the soda Iâd bought to accompany it.
âIt tastes better with beer,â Leito added from the back seat. Heâd come to join Holm and me in our car while we did the stakeout. âItâs probably the most common bar food around here. We canât really drink while on the job, though.â
âEspecially not in a car,â Holm muttered as he dug into his own food with relish. It had been a long, eventful day, and we were both famished.
âSo what do you think of what the old ladies told us?â I asked as I scanned the entrance to the cemetery. Despite the late hour, the gate door was blown wide open, and there was no sign of the groundskeeper, just as the ladies had said.
âWell, Iâm not sure how much credence I would normally give to a bunch of gossips,â Leito hummed. âBut I think this is all a little too much just to be a coincidence.â
âI agree,â Holm added before chomping onto another one of the fried balls. âI mean, she saw weird shadows moving around a cemetery right before dug-up bodies started to turn up?â
âYeah,â I muttered. âBut if thatâs true, it will mean a lot more work for us because now weâre dealing with two cemeteries.â I pursed my lips together in a frown. âWho knows how many other graves theyâve dug up here as well?â
âMaybe not too many?â Holm suggested with a shrug. âIf they started at the other cemetery and only just moved over to this one, maybe they havenât done as much damage here.â
âI guess that is one way to look at it,â I replied as I kept my eyes trained on the cemetery. There was no sign of anyone, and the darker it got, the harder it was to see anything at all.
We stayed there for a while, finishing up our food and keeping an eye out for anything out of the ordinary.
